Water sports enthusiasts are also very well served here, with everything from canoeing to white-water rafting, there is, if you have the nerve, the whole sky for flying, microlighting, hot-air ballooning and hang gliding Lake in the Pyrenees Over the past 30 years the Pyrenees have been rediscovered and are now becoming more and more popular. The Pyrenees have become a cheaper, but no less beautiful alternative to the Alps. Cathar castle near the Pyrenees Towns and villages are usually at the bottom of the list for things to do in the Pyrenees, but there are a few worth seeing. The western Pyrenees have Biarritz and Bayonne. The central Pyrenees have Pau (home to the first 18-hole golf course built in continental Europe, in 1860), Lourdes, Tarbes and the smaller but more picturesque Bareges, Argelès-Gazost and Cauterets.
