The historic French region of Gascony encompasses several modern day French departments including Gers, Landes, Hautes Pyrenees, Haute Garonne, Tarn et Garonne, Lot et Garonne and Pyrenees Atlantiques. In fact it covers most of two French regions, Midi-Pyrenees and Aquitaine and as far north as Bordeaux in the Gironde.
Cirque de Gavarnie Gascony and now Gers is the region producing the famous Armagnac Brandy, Floc and wines from the vineyards of Madiran, Cotes St Mont and Cotes des Gascogne. This region of South West France is also well known for foods featuring goose and duck. Best known are Foie Gras, confit de canard and magret de canard. Gascony / Gers has several large music festivals during the summer holiday season. Marciac Jazz festival in August is world famous, Europe’s biggest country music festival is held in Mirande during July and Vic Fezensac hosts Tempo Latino, a salsa / latin music festival, also in July. This rural Gite (holiday cottage) is within a short distance of all these events and has a private pool to relax in during the hot summers days inbetween festivities. French Gite with Pool A little further away are the larger towns and cities of Auch, Tarbes, Pau, Lourdes, Mont de Marsan, Biarritz, Bordeaux and Toulouse. There are plenty of nearer, typically French villages which are full of character. These include Riscle, Nogaro, Plaisance, Aire sur l’Adour, Eauze, Termes D’Armagnac and Maubourguet. Gites (rental holiday cottages) are the best way to enjoy this rural area of Gascony (Gers, Midi Pyrenees). Holiday makers can sample the local wines and foods, relax in the pool or visit the many attractions of South West France. If you want a change from the Gite’s pool there are many beaches on the Atlantic coast between Biarritz and Bordeaux. Biarritz Beach For more active holidays the Pyrenees are within a short drive, past the popular holiday destination Lourdes. The Pyrenees are ideal for mountain biking and walking holidays.
