Gite near Aire sur l’Adour

Aire sur l’Adour is the biggest town of the Tursan region in Landes, south-west France.  Aire sur l’Adour is in the Côtes-de-Saint-Mont wine region 150 kms south of Bordeaux, 50 kms north of Pau and 30 kms southeast of Mont-de-Marsan. Aire sur l’Adour is situated where the river Adour enters into the department of Landes and also at the junction of the regions of the Tursan, Armagnac (Gascony or Gers) and vic-bilh (Madiran) which borders 3 departments: the Gers, Hautes-Pyrenees and Pyrenees-Atlantiques.

Aire sur l’Adour was created by the Romans in 50 B.C. by the troops of Crassus, lieutenant of Caesar, and is the location of a battle between Crassus and Pompeii. The Romans called Aire sur l’Adour “vicus-julii” or “the town of Julius” (Caesar). Aire sur l’Adour really started to grow in the 5th century at the hands of the Visigoths and in fact Aire sur l’Adour was their second city after Toulouse. This development made Aire sur l’Adour an important market and stopping place for the pilgrims on the way of Holy Jacques of Compostelle. For 1500 years the importance of the diocese of Aire sur l’Adour has left its marks such as the church of Sainte-Quitterie, UNESCO World Heritage site, the road of Saint Jacques de Compostelle and the cathedral of Saint Jean Baptiste.

The heart of the Aire sur l’Adour is situated on either side of the river Adour.  The city Hall, the commercial centre and the Holy cathedral John Baptist are located on the south shore and the church of Sainte-Quitterie, main industrial area and the adjoining town of Barcelonne-du-Gers are on the northern side. For centuries Aire sur l’Adour has been the capital of Foie Gras, a Gascony delicacy renowned throughout France.

Our Gite with pool is situated a short drive away near Riscle in the Gers. The Gite is a excellent location to see the area and is centrally located for the Gers, Landes and Pyrenees regions. The Gite has a private pool, private garden, 3 bedrooms and all mod cons needed for a relaxing holiday in south west France.
