Gites De France

Gites de France is a organisation created to develop and promote rural tourist accommodation also known as Gites. Gites de France was initially created in the Basses-Alpes just after the Second World War.  The Gites de France organisation was intended to offset the migration of people from rural France and make use of the empty rural French cottages

Gites de France is an association for the promotion, marketing and standardisation of Gites or French holiday cottages.  Gite de France agents award each Gite a rating of between 1 and 5 “wheat stalks”, the equivalent of stars for a Hotel or Bed & Breakfast, known as Chambre D’hôte in France. The Gites de France system is based on the Gites’ amenities rather than the quality of the Gite. The more facilities the Gite provides the higher the Gite de France rating. There are drawbacks because Gites with a private pool are given the same rating as a Gite with shared pool, a Gite sleeping 6 with 2 people on a sofa bed or a Gite with 3 bedrooms are also classed the same.
